Over 12% Expected to Cut Cable and Satellite TV in 2010

I ran across this article today citing a Yankee Group study that 1 in 8 subscribers will eliminate or cut back their cable or satellite TV in 2010. With more than 90% of US households currently subscribing to some form of pay TV I am a bit suprised that the number of households cutting back is not higher.

The alternative options these days to watching paid cable/satellite TV are numerous:

  • My family canceled cable last year as we setup a low cost internet box to watch Hulu and utilize ClearQAM channels via our high speed internet connection.
  • With a $9/mo suscription to Netflix you can get unlimited access to hundreds of TV show series along with thousands of movies
  • Hulu (our personal favorite) allows us watch from thousand of tv shows and movies. The best part is that Hulu offers a desktop application that we integrated into our media center pc. It allows us to find and watch movies all from our couch with our media pc remote.
  • Fancast also offers many other tv series although I haven't found a meda center pc application to watch the media.
  • Most major networks stream their prime time tv shows via their website including CBS, ABC, NBC, and FOX.
  • With the digital tv transition most households can at least get a couple channels over the air at the same or better quality as their cable tv.
  • There are paid services like Amazon's VoD or AppleTV.

  • GoogleTV is rumored to be announced in May.
